Clon Distillery enjoys double success at prestigious whiskey awards

One of West Cork’s top distilleries has had a nice run of award-winning shapes lately, and they’ve just added two more to their collection.

Clonakilty Distillery has won two major awards at the prestigious World Whiskeys Awards.

The maritime distillery wins in two categories on March 24and – with Visitor Experience Manager Ewan Paterson winning Visitor Attraction Manager of the Year in Icons of Whiskey 2022, while their multi-award winning Clonakilty Small Batch Single Malt Whisky, added another distinction to his silverware collection

Speaking about the award, Mr Paterson paid tribute to the entire team at Clonakilty Distillery:

He said: “It is an absolute honor to receive this Icons of Whiskey award from Whiskey Magazine. I would like to thank the whole team of the Clonakilty distillery, management, production and office team, who allow us to delight our visitors. I am proud to work with the brilliant Visitor Experience team who make my job a pleasure every day.

He added: It has been a difficult two years and I thank them all for their continued support and enthusiasm. Being part of the Clonakilty Distillery since we opened our doors in 2019 has been a wonderful journey and the future is very exciting!

Clonakilty’s Small Batch Single Malt was the team’s second prize of the evening, winning trumps in the Single Malt Small Batch category of the World Whiskeys Awards 2022.

Clonakilty Distillery’s Chief Distiller, Paul Corbett, said the team were delighted to be recognized for their Clonakilty Small Batch single malt, which was in collaboration with O’Hara Brewery.

He said: “O’Hara’s brews exceptional beers and by sniffing the barrels before filling them, I knew we were going to craft something special. The resulting Clonakilty Small Batch single malt has a complex blend of chocolate, fruit and spice notes with a rich mouthfeel and we are delighted that it has been recognized nationally.

Clonakilty Distillery founder Michael Scully also expressed his joy at the awards and said the team was delighted with a busy summer:

“I am delighted to see Ewan recognized today as the best visitor attraction manager, the team are incredibly proud of him, he plays a central role in our visitor experience and if you have visited before you will know that he goes above and beyond to ensure that everyone who walks through the doors has the best possible experience at Clonakilty Distillery.

He added: “It is a testament to Paul and his team of distillers that our Clonakilty Small Batch Single Malt has also been recognized at today’s awards.

“We will be able to legally launch our very first whiskey made from our distillery in May later this year, so it has been a great start to 2022 for us and we are really looking forward to a busy summer and autumn which will welcome visitors to new our distillery tours.
