The Fettercairn distillery in North East Scotland recently unveiled the third release of its Warehouse 2 collection, a small series designed to celebrate what are described as hidden gems of whiskey casks in its 14 dunnage warehouses.
Fettercairn Warehouse 2 Batch No. 003 was distilled in 2015 and aged in a selection of handpicked ex-bourbon casks (57%), rum casks (16%) and French red wine barrels (27%). ). This series was limited to 9,600 bottles.
Lot #003 features a combination of casks selected from Warehouse 2 aging stock, where high humidity combines with the relatively cool, temperate environment to leave its mark on the maturing alcohol.
This set features what is described as the distillery’s tropical house style, which comes from the copper cooling ring distillation process. The whiskey is bottled at 50.6% ABV to highlight the heavier influence of French red wine barrels, while adding depth to the final spirit and base notes of Fettercairn’s signature tropical characteristics.
The distiller’s notes show that his amber and golden single malt leads with a warm sweetness on the nose and palate with a fruity mix of passion fruit, papaya and red fruits, alongside dragees and baking spices.
The Warehouse Collection is said to showcase the skills of the Fettercairn Distillery team, as well as that of master whiskey maker Greg Glass, and their ability to seek out unusual and interesting casks to craft these small batches.
“With high expectations following the popularity of the first two versions of the collection, we knew we had to offer something special with this third version, without compromising the approach we have strived to take,” Glass said. in a prepared statement from Fettercairn. .
“As such, when hand selecting casks for this edition, I wanted to push the envelope to create a beautifully balanced single malt that offered both freshness and complexity of character. I believe lot #003 is another true for Fettercairn.
He said that Fettercairn’s Warehouse 2 has a lot to offer in terms of cask diversity and quality. “Choosing French barrels paired with rum casks for this release brought a truly different dimension to that spirit and allowed us to continue to showcase our innovative and experimental approach.”
Fettercairn Warehouse 2 Batch No.003 is now available with a suggested retail price of £60 in major global markets including the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and France, extending to major Asian markets from May.
