Give this whiskey another chance

welcome to Cheap shots, a column where we revisit the inexpensive, so-called “Bottom Shelf” whiskeys and spirits we drank with love in college and examine them with a more refined – almost adult – lens. I’ll choose a new low-end bottle to drink and review it with an open mind, a positive attitude, and a mouth watering. Today: Wild Turkey

Wild Turkey Bourbon

What is that? It’s bourbon, you idiot! Aged in American white oak barrels, Wild Turkey is an 81-degree Kentucky-style bourbon whiskey found in most bars nationwide. Nestled side-by-side with bottles like Jim Beam and Jack Daniels, Wild Turkey’s approachable vanilla-caramel flavor makes it as easy to drink over ice as it is in a cocktail.

Smells like: Whiskey – i.e. Wild Turkey has that sweet, spicy whiskey smell that lights up your nostrils like illegal fireworks on 4th of July (as well as the many days surrounding the very loud holiday) and hits you with a sharp signature scent that I can only describe as “Wild Turkey”.

Tastes like: There are bottles of bourbon that you bring for special occasions — like meeting your partner’s parents or something — but don’t let that fool you into thinking the price always dictates the flavor. The wild turkey tastes like cheap bourbon whiskey; that citrus caramel flavor can get a little overwhelming at times, but this stuff goes down so easily it’s pretty easy to ignore.

Try it: Over ice or with sparkling water for a quick after-work refresher or with a splash of ginger ale to bring out that sweetness. The string of your hitch unwinds! (your tether string unwinds) WHOA-oh. Whoa-OH.
