How to Make an Old Fashioned Whiskey Cocktail to Celebrate World Whiskey Day

Developed in the 19th century and given its name in the 1880s, the Old Fashioned is a timeless classic. But did you know that this is the only cocktail that is believed to exist that bears his name, known as the whiskey glass?

A whiskey glass is a short goblet often used to serve spirits, but it is named after this delicious whiskey cocktail.

Old fashioned glasses usually have a wide rim and a thick, sturdy base.

This is how non-liquid ingredients can be crushed with a pestle before the main liquid ingredients are added.

Here’s how you can make an Old Fashioned – in an old-fashioned glass – at home.

Try Darkness 8 Year Old Single Malt for a smoky, chocolatey finish. Or why not try the Tobermory 12 Year Old – launched to celebrate the return to life of the distillery after a two-year hiatus.

You can also try this pre-made Old Fashioned cocktail mix here – finish with a slice of orange zest.

A simple trick to improving your Old Fashioned depends on ice.

And Old Fashioned might be a cocktail to sip on, but if you load up on ice, you’ll quickly find that your drink has turned into a watery mess.

To prevent this from happening, avoid small cubes – you could invest in a sphere of ice.
