Interstate cocktail slingers set to hijack Memphis Slim’s for Rye July whiskey series • Glam Adelaide

A series of very lucky events is set to take over Memphis Slim’s House of Blues in honor of Rye July. It’s time to get out and drink your whiskey, because ‘The Shake Down’ is coming!

The Shake Down is a four-part series taking over your Wednesday nights and exposing your palate to all things whisky, rye and bourbon.

So round up the good ol’ whiskey and rye drinking boys in your chevy and experience your favorite international whiskey brands in a new way – courtesy of Fever Tree.

Each week, an interstate venue will hijack the Memphis Slim’s bar and serve specialty cocktails, showcasing bartending skills and a whistling whiskey.

To kick off the series, Fitzroy’s cocktail slingers Black Pearl will organize a Sazerac cocktail menu on Wednesday July 6. Black Pearl has been a Fitzroy institution for 20 years and is keen to share its local legends with Adelaide’s whiskey-drinking crowd.

Hailing from New Orleans, the Sazerac company is the purveyor of quality Sazerac whiskey, alongside other whiskeys in their portfolio, such as their “God Tier” Pappy Van Winkle.

Next on the list is the Western Australian sea bass, Ezra’s book – hailing from the first wave of small bars to hit Perth in 2009. The intimate Prohibition-inspired venue will grace South Australian shores on Wednesday July 13 to showcase its Wild Turkey cocktail menu.

Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey is said to be a rich, amber spirit, with notes of caramel, butterscotch, cinnamon, cloves and a hint of nutmeg.

Wild Turkey presents itself as a cocktail spirit, sharing recipes like an old-fashioned traditional and a boulevardier to a whiskey sour, a Kentucky mule and a toddy. It will be interesting to see how Ezra’s mixologists narrow down the list!

Week three will see cocktail slingers from The hollow of the frog Saloon tries Angel’s Envy. Small-batch handcrafted whiskey gets its name from the barrel aging process. The 5% of spirits lost each year during aging in barrels is called the “angel’s share”. When the whiskey was perfected, the creators joked that they got a better deal than the Angels – so Angel’s Envy was born.

Named after Brisbane’s first red-light district, Frog’s Hollow specializes in entertaining a rare group of drunks, larrikins, thieves and muggers with their whisky. Adelaide thugs will face the same treatment on Wednesday July 20, with the possibility of tasting a rare rye whiskey from Angel’s Envy, not available in Australia. The product is specifically and exclusively available for this event.

The final week of The Shake Down on Wednesday July 27 will see Sydney’s Nashville-inspired underground bar, by Jolene, take center stage. Jolene’s knows the world of whiskey well, with over 150 whiskeys, 100 of which come specifically from American whiskey distillers.

Jolene’s will serve a curated cocktail menu, featuring WhistlePig Whiskey’s ultra-premium Vermont rye whiskey, and Waco’s Balcones Distillery – the first US distiller to win first place in the UK’s Best in Glass competition in 2012.
